The Day After

Hurricane Sandy completed her whirlwind tour of the northeastern coastline yesterday, leaving significant damage, coastal flooding, and many without power in her wake. The Fox Point Hurricane Barrier withstood its first real test since its completion in 1966. The storm surge in Providence was 8 feet and would have caused damage downcity had the barrier not been there. (The Barrier was built to withstand a surge of 25.5 feet.) It's the largest storm surge the state has withstood since Hurricane Carol topped 14 feet in 1954.

Today, life around the barrier has returned to normal. None of the streets are closed and there are no signs of the flooding that occurred south of the barrier. The boater you see in today's photo was fishing for stripers in front of the now open hurricane barrier. Several other fishermen lined the riverwalk, also trying for stripers. The water levels are still running a bit high, but there's no longer any danger of flooding from the storm.

Post processing started with a brilliant warm filter in Topaz Adjust. I then adjusted the adaptive exposure, contrast, and adaptive saturation sliders. A slight levels adjustment was added in PSE.
