I returned to the Hunts Mills Fish Ladder today to see if any herring were making their way upstream. There were numerous herring in the eddies downstream, however there was a section of river below the fish ladder that they could not navigate. I was told today that the Army Corps of Engineers, who built the fish ladder, are planning to redirect a portion of the stream such that the section they cannot currently navigate becomes passable. That is the only section restricting their access to the Turner Reservoir, which is where they need to go to spawn. Given the abundance of herring congregating in the eddies below the falls, it's no surprise that this Great Blue Heron decided to perch on a branch above the river. There's little doubt that he'll be eating his fill once the human spectators leave.
Post processing was done entirely in PSE today. I adjusted the levels heavily to improve contrast, and then applied a saturation adjustment to the overall image.
