Albion

The tiny mill village of Albion still sprawls along the Blackstone River on the Cumberland and Lincoln town line. The railroad crossing seen in this photo is still active and services the Providence & Worcester Railroad. The bike path in this location roughly follows the old Blackstone Canal Tow Path - a canal and tow path that were put out of business by that very railroad. It seems trains were faster and more economical than barges pulled by mules.

The mill seen in the background is the historic Albion Mill. Construction of the mill started in 1850, replacing an industrial building that was built in 1823. Over 70 years, additions were made to the building resulting in its present-day appearance. The original 1850 construction is still present, however. The mill was built along the tow-path on the Blackstone Canal. Like most of the other mills in Rhode Island, the Albion Mill produced high quality textiles, many of which were sold in outlet stores adjacent to the property.

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, boost black, boost white, protect highlights, and color sensitivity sliders. A levels adjustment and a sepia photo filter were added in PSE.

Here's the high res version in Smugmug: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Photo-Challenges/PAD2013/i-qMkmcrF/0/XL/2013%2008%2031_0054%20copy-XL.jpg

Note that I also took a photo of the Albion Dam while at this location. If interested, you may view that photo here: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Miscellaneous/Assorted-Photos/i-wqChNv5/0/XL/2013%2008%2031_0028%20copy-XL.jpg
