When my husband called me first thing this morning, those were the first words he said. My imagination went wild. Then he said, "I forgot to lock up the chickens last night." I pictured all of my sweet hens murdered by preditors and felt sick. He mumbled a bit more about the Red Sox game distracting him before getting to the point. "The brown one has disappeared."
Apparently he saw her before he left for his early morning golf tournament, but he was walking our dog and our dog scared the chicken and she was last seen running down the road across the street from our house. So I searched the neighborhood, trespassed on the power lines, trampled through poison ivy wearing just flip flops, only to find her an hour later standing right outside her pen, chatting with her friends.
By that point the animal control officer had arrived to help and it took the two of us about a half an hour to get her back inside the run. Meet Jasmine, otherwise known as Chewbacca. She lays green eggs that are my all time favorites.
I'm so glad you found her! Isn't that how it goes! I love fresh eggs and am so jealous! Wish I could have them at my place! I eat them every morning and just finished a dozen from a friend. Wonderful capture!
That is a funny story, but I bet it was a bit frustrating at the time. I'm glad Jasmine/Chewbacca is home safe with her friends. And...um....I HAVE to see this green egg!
So you get to have green eggs and ham? Glad she's home safely. You should have known by the old saying...curses and chickens always come home to roost.
Christie beat me to it --- i was going to ask if you had a pig too. Smart chicken to come know. She knows a good thing. Let's see if you can top that exciting morning tomorrow!
@hillcrest My husband said the same thing before he went to bed tonight! He was so bummed tonight about baseball. He kept going back and forth between three games that would be the deciding factors, so every time I looked up different uniforms were on the TV.
@christiehicks@sunnygreenwood@lorihiro Please don't mention the P-word around here. Steve wanted a pet pig when we met, and I've exorcized that demon. Any pig that comes our way would be a pet, and I don't want to feed that kind of big.
jasmine is a good one..you raised her well. she knows to stay close to home....green eggs...really....so the green eggs and ham is for real...love that...you might have to bring me one so i can just see it with my own eyes next month :) xoxoxoxoxo and your comment on my teardrop photo...WOW just are the most insightful person that i have ever (not met yet... :) )
Great picture. Now we really do need to see the green eggs. We had hreen, blue, brown, white, or speckled eggs at the pre-school where I used to teach. We didn't realize they were from ornamental chickens until they hatched. They were all different- some even had feathers all the way down their legs or feather top-knots on their heads, or variegated feathers. We had to take them back to the farmer we got the eggs from. Noone else would take them.
OMG WHAT A STORY!!! I am so glad it had a happy ending. I was literally on the edge of my seat reading. . .whew. I don't think I could have taken any other ending. So, welcome home Jasmine. Glad you know what side your bread is buttered on. :) How are the fruit flies?
Glad to see you got her back
what a story
I could picture people thinking you were looking for a lost dog
green eggs??
never seen green eggs before!
glad she's back
@jenrobcarr My husband has the exact same sense of humor as you do! He thought I should have taken a photo of our chicken crossing the road. Uh, no, I wasn't taking any chances of losing her again.
@mwarren365 Yep, just flip flops, and there were no other photographers or even people around to help me catch that hen. Ha! You made me laugh and the writer in me cringed at that mistake in syntax, but then it also made me laugh. Good catch!
@stepheesue The fruit flies are gone! And I was so happy to pass on this tip to my best girlfriends at our monthly whine (wine) and dine dinner, and I gave you full credit. Apparently fruit flies are afflicting everyone.
Oh, haha!! I'm working my way backwards--I guess she needed an adventure! Funny too, our dog is named Jasmine and SHE got out a couple of weeks ago (storm blew our fence open, it's locked now). I spent all morning looking for her and putting up flyers in the rain, only to come home in tears to find her sitting on the back porch. Sigh. Maybe they were on the same, "I'm going on my Grande Adventure now" wavelength...
