By no means an inspired shot, this was a technical study for me: my only goals were to take a photo with even light on the face and to achieve some semblance of focus in the eyes.

You can see the pizza tray I am holding in my hand to bounce the light back up under the brim of the hat.

I did a tiny bit of fiddling with the colour - the original had a *much* more pervasive orange-yellow hue. And I also tried a niftly new photoshop trick: using a high pass filter to sharpen the image a bit.

What I am especially struggling with at the moment is sorting out white balance / skin tones. I don't know how to figure out which is the best white balance setting. Any tips would be welcome! :D
i enjoy using the "curves" in photoshop. They have that Black -White and grayish color, color picker things. I use the white one and the grey one sometimes to help me achieve different white balances. example I would click the black color picker in curves and then click on black window frame in your picture...or maybe that dark patch under the orange lamp. Click several places and see the changes it makes! Just a thought. Hope I'm not overstepping the suggestion line ;0)

Thanks @warrenbhall ! Not overstepping at all ~ I am VERY glad to learn new how-to stuff!! I am a big "curves" fan too, but I have never used the eye dropper feature. Totally going to check that out!
