I first saw the Kalakala in Kodiak in the late 80s. An uncle took me by to see her. I didn't have much interest then because it just looked like an old hulk on the beach. When the guy wanted to drag her off the beach another uncle tried to convince him to buy a big barge, scrap the "Peralta" hull and just salvage the "Kalakala" portion. I wonder if it would have been saved since so much of the money spend has been trying to keep it afloat.
It's a sad end. I saw her in Tacoma a few years ago partially submerged and she looked very eerie. Interesting about the uncle's theory - I wonder too, what a different ending this may have had. Several old ferries have new lives in a different role. My son was married last year on the MV Skansonia on Lake Union - such a lovely restoration.
@squamloon@cljs@boatpainter@jankoos It is a sad end to an unusual ship. She represents an interesting period of history. Unfortunately Bevis and his successors didn't come up with sufficient planning before making moves and paired up with the wrong people.

@nanderson A massive money pit, but it would have been nice to see her salvaged.
