Trencadís (literally "broken pieces") was traditionally used in my area to cover indoor walls approximately up to waist-high. It was not only decorative, but it also protected the wall against humidity, and it was a way to make use of broken tiles. My grandmother house had it. Nowadays, some people use it (on the outside of their houses) just for decorative purposes, and as a link to our past.
@bruni Yes, in typical old houses it was inside - maybe with different colours. I have always seen it as normal, as my granny's house had it, and it was quite colourful!
