The Crataegus hedges are the natural borders of strips of meadows owned by various farmers .
In the early days the separation was done by wires. The cows ( and other animals) did not graze close to them so the bushes got time to grow. The farmers did like it to as the good use the timber.

I had an aunt who used to say, Never cast a clout 'till May be out' I could never convince her that it shoul be 'never cast a clout 'till the may be out' love the 'old name' for hawthorn.
