1066 The battle of Hastings

1066, a date all English school children know of.

Look at the foreground twig, it appears lto be two figures. The one on the right is an archer
and about to release an arrow. The other is the unfortunate battle victim.

In January 1066, Edward the Confessor lay on his deathbed and handed the Crown of England to Harold.

This is where the problems started. As although Harold was formerly crowned in Westminster Abbey by no less than two ArchBishops, the fact that the Pope refused to officially recognise the Royal Appointment meant that the Normans started their whispering campaign, which led to War.

The World famous Bayeux Tapestry depicts all of the events from this period in 1066, along with Halleys comet, which was seen in the skies around the time of the coronation. This again played into the hands of the Normans, William and his followers based in Normandy, who said it was a 'prophecy of doom'.

Indeed, Harold lost to William The Conqueror at the battle of Hastings, after having been hit
fatally in the eye with an arrow.
