From acorns grow

From acorns grow... slow growing trees that outgrow patios. Situated outside the front door, I have a young oak tree which grew from an acorn I happened to plant a few years back, and it's doing well too (having just recently leafed) Acorns you could say, pack a symbolic punch in the tree world being a capsule of majestic promise to come, and also being the very beginning of a long endeavour which may finally come to flourishion, one that stands the test of time beyond any timeframe we may live. I have to admit, the idea of being at the origin of such a journey appeals to me on many levels.

No doubt at some point, I'll transfer this tree to the nearby field, but until that day arrives I'll quite enjoy watching its steady progress. Considering just how immense these trees can grow and how ancient they can become, I tend to imagine it one day being a fine, sturdy oak and its canopy giving summer shade for centuries to come. Hopefully I've helped a little to get it off to a promising start with some good, early memories. It can tell the other surrounding field trees that it was once sat in a pot and they, the other trees, won't believe a single word of it. They'll call it yet another fanciful 'acorn tale' as told by the ancient oak, and scoff at how that story could be possible.

It's well watered and fed with nutrients and so is perhaps doing slightly better than it would do in the field, for now. Or I tend to tell myself that as I'd miss it being around.
Good for you! A town in Florida, known for its oak trees downtown, just removed a bunch of them, much to the dismay of the residents! I saw a quote that actually had the audacity to say "they were reaching the end of their life". Really?

It may be nearly time for your protege to go out into the big wide field and spread its roots. Like humans, their 'feet' need to grow bigger in order to support their growing bodies. It looks very healthy, I'm sure you've given it a good start.

You must be quite a gardener Matt....I am not surprised you are a tree grower somehow! Your door looks very welcoming!

Great stuff! Someone wrote in my high school yearbook, "Remember the mighty oak was once a nut like you." Your oak will be sturdy stuff.

Years later, your grandchildren's children will tell the story of how the mighty oak that stands in the nearby field began life in a pot. Nice narrative (and shot)!

beautiful shot and wonderful read. i grew up in Wethersfield, CT, where the Charter Oak was - if you are interested in American history, you might want to read about it. As children, we used to take walks on the green and look at the stump - there was a virus that killed the oaks trees - and be told how the mighty oak helped preserve our freedom as Americans by hiding our documents.
