Sunday – 15th July, 2012. We left Evian for Courmayer, in the Italian Alps. The trip was long but we had a full day stop at Chambery. Chambery is the capital of the Department of Savoie in the Rhone Alps region. It wasn’t a positive experience for us; there wasn’t much interesting sites to see and all the retail outlets were closed for the week-end.
This is a monument of Antoine Favre, flanked by a statue entitled ‘Science’ on the right and ‘Jurisprudence’ on the left. The statues adorn the Place du Palais de Justice and the Palais de Justice (which is at the back of the statues) is the Law Courts, an imposing building.
Antoine Favre, Baron of Pérouges, (5 October 1557 – 1624) was a nobleman and jurist. He was a member of the Savoyard court at Chambery from 1585 onwards, and its president from 1610 onwards. Favre was one of a distinguished group of literary figures in Savoy in the early 17th c. In addition to his legal writings, he composed several collections of devotional poetry.
