It certainly would be a stunning image without the tree, very focused on the shape. The tree does lessen the starkness, maybe that was intended.

It would be too sad if someone was that averse to photographers or symmetry. :-(
I choose to believe there was once a tree on the other side, but it developed root rot or something and passed away. ;-)
It looks like windows on the towers. I'm assuming there is access to the top? That's a view I'm sure not many people get to see.
