I always loved that classic Motown song, written by Tony Joe White in 1962 and popularized by R&B vocalist Brook Benton in 1970. This image was taken on a rainy night in Georgia, at the Five Points MARTA subway station in downtown Atlanta. I cross-processed it to emphasize the grittiness of the moment. Best viewed enlarged.
P.S. Upon further contemplation, I would like to also subtitle this shot "Midnight Train to Georgia", my all time favorite song by Gladys Knight and the Pips (and a number one hit in 1973). I can see this image being associated with many different songs!
Oh, wow, I love this photo, Danny. That was a great song, too. My husband was born in Atlanta but has been a FL resident since the 60s. I've been there a couple times for a Fannie Mae conference in the late 90s right there in Five Points---can't recall the hotel but it led to a shopping mall and Houstons was across the street. The Marta underground was right there, too unfortunately I never got to see or ride any of the trains. Cool shot!
Great vanishing point... those trains seem to go on and on! Your reference to 'Rainy Night in Georgia" got me to thinking about other songs I know about Georgia... "The Night that the Lights Went Out in Georgia" and a bluegrass tune that talks about 'being buried beneath 6 feet of red Georgia clay'... think they might be references to underground transportation? :)
Great shot Danny, "Downtown train" by Rod Stewart. I can just see this shot with loads of songs attached to it lol. I love the processing Danny its got the old polaroid effect to it. Great work
I love MARTA. Last time I road it was with a bunch of high school debate students in Atlanta for the Emory University tournament. There was an ice storm and it let us off in a terrible location about 9 PM. Not remembering how we got back to the hotel from there. I do love Atlanta, though!
The artist from Motown during the 60's were awesome. My radio was always on and song after song was a hit. My ties to Georgia is Ft. Gordon where I went to Military Police school.
oooo I love that song - but I must confess I always thought the original was Randy Crawford. Just treating myself to a listen. Randy Crawford is one of my favourite vocalists ever! Do you know her version?
Fabulous corss processing Danny. A very underused and underrated process but oerfect for this scene. I will throw in Homeward Bound as a song. I've been singing it in my head for days!!
