The legend of the hunched bridge

The strange shape of the bridge of Bobbio, in the province of Piacenza, caused various legends and myths.
According to an ancient tradition, the devil got in touch with Saint Colombano, promising to build the bridge in one night in exchange for the first mortal soul who would cross it. The saint accepted. In the night, the devil summoned various demons who helped him in the work of masonry, carrying the vaults of the bridge. The demons were of different stature and so the various arches of the bridge went out of variable size. In the morning, the devil lay in wait at the end of the bridge, to demand his compensation. Saint Colombano sent him a little dog. The duped devil, before to return to hell, kicked the bridge to make it also lopsided.
