Sloping Off by ubobohobo

Sloping Off

Plains turkeys or bustards are large native Australian birds that stand about 1m above the ground. This male was with a group of five on the farm this afternoon but they are hard to photograph as they always walk away when approached. He stayed a little longer than usual giving the rest of the group time to slope off to a safer distance
Very nice capture of this interesting turkey. He's really tall.

What a lovely shot, he certainly blends in with the background so well. He looks as though he is on a mission.

I haven't seen this turkey. Is he a native to Victoria?

Who's sloping off - you, them or him! Love that expression - think I'll just slope off too! BTW this is really good focus on his small head too!

@777margo I don't think so. He prefers the open grasslands. He was here on the coast in 1770. On his second landing on Australian soil, Capt Cook caught and ate them and named the headland Bustard Heads as a consequence. His landing site is now the town of 1770.

@maggiemae "sloping off", a phrase my mother used and it just came back to me when I trailed around trying to get this shot. It seemed the perfect description.

This is a very different kind of buzzard or turkey than I'm used to seeing. I think he's very pretty. I like the setting with all the tall grasses.
