On our last island stay the only working vehicle was a tractor. The refuse was transported by boat to the mainland. To get to the boat it was carried by the donkey.
I agree and think donkeys are often ill-treated. Visiting a NT house we saw where the donkey used to walk round a wheel in a โshedโ to get water from a well in a bucket - never fresh air I bet and just hope it was well fed. Well taken, Jackie
@phil_sandford@quietpurplehaze I saw the two donkeys in a lovely grassy/green field the evening before. The rider didn't carry a stick and when Donkey stopped, stuck his head in a hedge and refused to budge his rider just gave him a push. They're traditional, working animals bred to carry loads. I would guess most of the refuse is modern light plastic.
@merrelyn it's a working animal no different to others on farms (except not eaten !!) @robz It looked healthy enough and his owner was kind to him as he did his work @joysabin perhaps better than child labour eh Joy!?? @Dawn The driver lifted the rubbish out of the bins quite easily so I don't think it was over loaded @wendyfrost he looked ok @quietpurplehaze@phil_sandford
All your comments have been so interesting to read and I would never condone animal cruelty or post it on a forum such as 365. I cannot guess what might happen to this animal when his working life comes to an end. But what I did observe, on my two sightings of the island's donkeys, they looked healthy, well fed and I did not witness any cruelty when transporting the refuse rubbish.
@30pics4jackiesdiamond Thanks for giving us more background to your photo - it is good to know that he was being treated properly. Donkeys are such lovely little fellows. :)
