For those that didn't like my dusty flying ant yesterday, here's an even dustier fly on an aggie bud
Today I watched a bee excavate earth from the bottom of a flower pot and ferry in quite large (longetr than its body anyway) bits of leaves, I suppose it's a queen building a nest? As long as she's doing me, and my geranium, no harm, she is more than welcome to stay
as far as i know, the queen bee only leaves its hive when she has to mate with drones (at least 20, what a life!) and once she's satiated, she goes inside the hive and never leaves it unless there's a swarm. she doesn't do anything else (again, what a life!) but reproduce, lay eggs more than a thousand a day. the bee you saw would be a worker bee, one of the slaves, who would be useless to the queen once it's done its job and the queen will kill it.
the shot is fantastic although gross because you never know if it's gone somewhere else that's unsavory. eeek! do you know a body's death can be determined by the size of the flies on it? oh, stop, summerfield! sorry, i've read too much in my younger days.

I'm getting the hang of the macro lens now, but this fly kindly stayed put until I'd taken the shot. Thank you for your lovely comments
