As I don't like to disturb the area around this nest, I take several photos each time I go there. This, the furthest from the babies, I think shows the size relationship to the ficus leave around them. If you didn't see my note on a past past, that's "bird poop" all around them. In the past, I've watched the babies raise up and do their business so the nest stays clean. With their feathers now formed, I 'm guessing they'll leave the nest no more than a week from now...
@overalvandaan You KNOW I'll miss them, Saxa! On the other hand, there's a satisfaction that they've survived & grown up, and after this, I'll be watching for some other "mom" to give away to me the location of the next nest...
Oh I am so totally jealous! I am always hunting around for hummingbird nests!! How sweet are they?! They almost look big enough to take off! Amazing capture! Fav or sure!
Amazing capture of these little ones. Love that you managed to get a picture with their beaks up. They look ready to go or of course to be fed by their mother. I bet each day brings new things to photograph. I would find it hard to not want to stay there almost all the time to see the progress. It would be neat if you could do a time lapse video of the nest and the hummingbirds.
@dailypix Interestingly, they're always in that "ready" position...these and the other nests I've seen. I wrote about "staying to watch" on this photo caption http://365project.org/Weezilou/so-many-choices/2014-03-29 And you're SO right about time lapse...that would have been amazing...if I had a spare camera to leave out there for three weeks! (I have taken a short video each time I photograph them, and I got a second or two with mom darting around me...)
How fantastic! I'm lucky if I can even see one let alone capture a good picture of hummingbirds. And I don't think it ever occurred to me that they sat still in nests at one point in their lives. They are always so go, go, go! :)
@hbdaly These babies sit still as stone! It's truly stunning that this survival instinct is born within them! In one photo, I captured an eye-blink! Wow!
WoW! I just posted in your other shot with the cats & ducks & squirrel... that I was amazed at just that... Now I see the baby hummers! I think my heart would melt if I saw these little guys in person. Awesome capture! So happy you are here to share!!! Fav!
@lisatown Again, Thank You! I feel a kindred spirit in you! (We've got a lot of trees that they like, so every spring I sit out back and just *watch*... The mothers "give away their location" when they keep returning to one place...and then I go looking... Yes, they really are a joy!
