Hot Day...Chilly Reception...

What an "Hour" THIS was today! It was 102 degrees when we drove back to the hospital complex where I got http://365project.org/Weezilou/album-excess/2014-05-06 to get pictures during the Golden Hour. With my camera on a tripod, a man called out from an exiting car, "You can't take pictures on "campus"! He came back around & Ken went to speak with him while I snagged a couple more shots... He actually was quite polite with us but explained that, in short, I'd have to jump through hoops to be granted permission to take photos while on the grounds of this complex (!!! really???) He said I could stand on the grassy perimeter, but not on the parking lot... (Oh yes...he was Head of Security, or something like that. I asked for his card, but he didn't have one...) Within a minute two golf carts with security guards came up to tell me I wasn't allowed to take photos... "Sweet" as you may think I am, I can get ruffled... I looked them right in the eye and explained I was taking photos for a class and they had nice reflective surfaces and jacaranda trees to photograph... He shrugged and said he understood, "but they were just doing their job"... I could write extensively about what I think about this "attitude" in today's world... If I carried a cell phone camera I'd be unseen. If I really was trying to to be devious, I'd have to have "Idiot" emblazoned on my forehead to be walking around with an extended tripod & large Nikon!

In my opinion, they certainly put a chill on the warmth of the Golden Hour and ruined an otherwise-lovely photo. This address is on Warner Ave in Fountain Valley, CA. Whoever is in charge here has a shriveled little heart.

...and I'm not always as "sweet" as I seem if you cross me the wrong way...

I do not see the harm, and I chuckled as I read your commentary because I can become quite ruffled easily when it comes to a person's approach, tone of voice, etc. The whole security matter seems so silly

I feel for you, Louise! It makes no sense in this day and age - every Tom, Dick and Harry has a cell phone that takes pictures, yet a "proper" camera on a tripod makes grown men quiver! In any case, the colour of the sky, the reflective glass and those gorgeous trees make for a spectacular shot! If not for the inset, I'd fave this. :-(

Awesome shot

@timandelke and were it not for the rude intrusion as I was doing my homework, I'd have let it be a lovely photo, but I was making a statement...so yes, you get it!

Wow that's shocking, would have ruffled my feathers too if that happened to me. Still a great shot with the reflective glass and trees.

I'm sorry but I'm laughing here. I shouldn't be as it's a real shame you were denied the chance to photograph the beauty of the setting and its features. What has me laughing though is YOU! You go, Girl! What pluck and persistence you have. I could use a little more of that myself. It's a hoot that you put the security characters smack-dab in the middle of your otherwise very nice photo. They and their photo ruined a good shot!

@lyndemc "Laugh and the world laughs with you!" I thought it was high time I show what a multi-dimensional woman I am (...hear me roar...)!

Public space, yes? Did you ask him why not "allowed?" Malls are another place that I have run into considerable resistance to cameras. From the private security people.

@frankhymus something about worrying that images would "end up in the media"... How vague is that?! (Because they annoyed me, they did "end up in the media" with far more exposure than had nothing been said!) Yes, malls are problematical... I was on the sidewalkt in Paris taking a picture in a store window and someone raced out to stop me! Happened here, too, in a mall correador, taking a picture of a sweet Tiffany's window display...bam, security everywhere! Too bad some of that security wasn't present when the World Trade Center was demolished and the shootings at Fort Hood happened...etc etc... Little jobs...Big egos... Well, I'll stop... Thanks for sharing!

Deb
Way to go Louise! I mean really. What was the big deal? The building is reflected so not like you could see in and as for the trees, they're TREES! Wait, you're a spy in disguise right! I'm laughing at the image you painted though :)

@dgrynn Thanks, Deb...sometimes we need to question "authority!" I think we were posting here at the same time... in reply to Frank, I realize I can't seem to let it go...

@Weezilou absolutely!

Good Grief! Big Deal! Like everyone with a cell phone can take shots. I guess the tripod and big camera are intimidating. Hey, I'm with you. I can get pretty riled and verbal when confronted as you were -- Geez! The guy yelled at you to stop....... before even talking face to face??? I sort of sneak around with taking photos in malls, stores, etc. So far, so good. (But on a public street here in town a "scuzzy" woman threatened to sue me if I took her photo, and then continue to follow me around to see that I didn't, I guess. I finally asked her, "Why would I want your picture?" She left!) Only place I remember being told NO was in the largest MacDonald's in the world -- Moscow, Russia. Well, it WAS Russia!!

@aglennc Wow...it's obviously an international uproar! At least we can smile smugly when we say we've been run off in Paris and Moscow! I loved Deb's comment... "As for the trees...they're TREES!" I must learn to be more subtle!
