A Horse is a Horse, Of Course Of Course ...

Blahhhh... some days it all comes together and some days it doesn't! I've worked and reworked this photo and have concluded that what isn't working is that it's not a good still life arrangement to begin with. I like the elements ... I just have no decorating style, and, as Ken says, "too many 'things'..." My folk art horse was a new acquisition this weekend and I think he's marvelous. Forget the photo critique... Any decorators out there who might suggest what to do with this grouping? (and no,Ken, I'm not asking you!)

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and comments about yesterdays posted photos. I was delighted to see my Lunenburg waterfront make the PP as it was my personal favorite. I don't understand the algorithm, but I AM appreciative!
I love the horse too. I think this grouping works as a unit, but not if you want the focus on the horse. I think I would play around with removing items one by one and see what has the best balance. I do like the treatment you have given it.

Love the horse. I have no idea how to improve a still life.

I like the way you processed it!

It's an interesting collection. When in doubt, I always remember what I heard a gardener say - "you need a thriller, a spiller, and something spiky to make a planter look interesting". That, and using odd numbers of items. You can cheat by creating mini groups too. I'd begin by placing the horse in front of the split in the window?, then add items (or groups of items) beside and in front. Step back from time to time and unfocus your eyes so you see the arrangement as a whole rather than individual items.

Well...here's my 2 cents worth - I think it works b/c of the processing. Without it you would notice that there are many objects here, but with this processing you see it more as a unit. I like it...and I especially like the placement of the horse. If you want to play with it, I'd start by removing the larger cup in the center and move the left side objects a fraction closer to the center ...but not so much to make it uninteresting. Would be fun to play with it.

@allie912 I could hardly wait to start redoing it as per your suggestion this morning, Allie! I put the owl elsewhere next to a blue-glass pitcher with-dried-hydrangea atop a shelf and then I tightened the arrangement, moving it toward the center as elke @timandelke suggested. Those ideas, Elke, were wonderful for both garden AND interior! I did know about the odd-number groupings, but I so wanted to keep the owl in the mix even when I knew it wasn't working! Thank you BOTh for the nudge that I needed! Now, to get those "spikes" and some fresh wild-flowers (golden-rod?) for the metal basket and I think it'll work far better next time! THANK YOU ♥BOTH♥ so much!!!

@hwy61 Hi Karen! Your were writing as I was replying to Allie and Elke!
The two bowls in the center I got at a yard sale, both for under $1...they're ancient and unusable for anything but their gorgeous fragility! See what I wrote above... I'll rephotograph it again soon. We're headed out for the day to pick blueberries and get fresh produce from The Valley (about an hour+ away along the Bay of Fundy. I'm sure to find something wonderful while over there...and a lot of photo opportunities as well! ♥ to you, too, as I left for the two gals above!

Love the processing and the fabulous folk art horse! I see some of the suggestions I would give for grouping in the comments above. But I think when all is said and done you did a beautiful job with your composition.

Remembering your connections to the orchestra in your area, we had the pleasure of attending the NS Youth Orchestra's program the other night; it was wonderful! Our third year and it doesn't disappoint! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4A_VgriyqUY
