Photographer-in-Training

I'd be remiss in my grandmotherly duties if I didn't show my grandchildren how to use a camera! I've given Ashton one of my small cameras to use a few times, and he's had only a passing interest in it. Today at the zoo, I offered it again, and boy! did he catch on fast! He not only loved it and took about 40 photos (mostly of the turtle!), but later in the evening, when the classroom rabbit, our weekend visitor was running around the living room, Ashton came up to me and asked, "Where's *my* camera, Grandma?" It won't be long, I suspect, before I run out of room to save all his pictures, but I think he's off to a good start! (I did not crop the photos he took but that they had to fit into the squares. He really wanted one of the hair on the elephant!)
Great collage

I think Ashton has an eye for composition! How fun to see the world through his eyes and he has a great mentor!

@seattle Thanks for the nice comment Constance! I could see he was quite focused on getting the picture in the frame, so he's on the right direction. At 4, he still needs the dexterity to press the shutter button while holding the camera steady. That said, enthusiasm will carry him forward. I'm delighted!

it's a wonderful delight when we can teach our grandchildren this special skill! Well done :)

A second generation photographer in the bud...... He's off to a great start. (Linda is the third generation photography hobbyist in our family..)

@aglennc Actually...fifth! My grandmother traveled extensively (as they tended to do in that era) and I inherited her camera and a photo album via my father who was an avid photographer and taught me photography and how to develop film and make enlargements. I had my first camera at age 8. In turn, I taught the girls who are excellent photographers, but I'm bypassing them to make sure the littlest family members learn how to use an actual camera before they overlook it and head straight to cell phones and iPads!

@Weezilou Wow! Fifth! And I thought I had a lot of pictures -- slides, prints, etc. from my Dad. You've got more generations of photos than I do. Good for you.... I agree! Do what you can to discourage all the iPads and other electronics that occupy kids today.

@aglennc I have a large box of photos from my dad...many duplicated in different sizes ;-) Best of all (I think) is a box of negatives from both sides of my parent's families. Years ago my mother said I was probably the only one who'd ever do anything with them... I'm sure she was right, and I even bought an Epson scanner that held any number of sizes of negatives. Not all are very good, but it's a peek into family life from way back, and, without notes to go along, I have to do sleuthing and second guessing, but it's fun!

My 8 year old is starting to express interest in photography. He's been walking around the house taking pictures of random stuff with his Kindle.

i'm sure he's going to be a good one, and starting with animals....what a surprise!

@chard I absolutely laughed out loud! I hadn't thought of that!

It is wonderful that he wants to learn about photography. Much easier for youngsters these days what with all the digital technology available.

@Weezilou I knnow the feeling of all those old photos and negatives..... John has five tall, five drawer, filing cabinets in his office... Three, I think, are mostly filled with all the OLD family photos we have collected -- all sizes -- as family historians for my side of the family -- and also photos he inherited from his folks. Most have been scanned and are in our computer Legacy program, but we hate to get rid of the originals. What to do???

This is great! I like the hair on the elephant too - must be something all of us little boys have in common. ;-)
