Our American Possums come up short compared to the adorable Aussie possums. That face is "sorta cute" to me, but compared to other animals, well, not so much. And you don't even want to know how unattractive his tail is! They're nocturnal, and I suspect there isn't a home that doesn't have some in the yard. The left-over cat food was a treat, I'm sure, but everyone has fruit & citrus trees, and they can live happily on that (and snails and grubs, too, but I don't want to think about that!)
I keep thinking I've covered all the backyard birds and animals, and they still keep coming!
How wonderful a new visitor come to see you! He looks cute but I need to see the whole of him as I have never seen a possum. I will Google him. Does the cat like him?
@jamibann Walt Disney made them look pretty adorable in "Song of the South", and they remain a part of one of Disneyland's favorite rides, Splash Mountain!
@joansmor Startle? Not much! I saw the cat sitting by the door watching, and that's when I saw him. Three flash photos and he didn't flinch. Clearly he understands he's "one of the pack" around here!
@louannwarren Thanks for that confirmation to folks here... He looks like something you wouldn't want around, but they cause no problems...
@gilbertwood Loved reading the comparison! When we were visiting Fraisene Nat'l Park in Tasmania, we had a possum following right along with us as we walked to the dining room! Yours there are SO ADORABLE!
@laurieewilson Given what you've shared about your yard, I'm sure you do!
@kwind Cat food or grubs... I believe he's found the better of the lot!
Dunno about our possums being adorable Louise, they're fine in the bush but a bloomin' pest in suburban gardens and a real problem when they decide they'd like to take up residence in the the ceiling space. Sounds like the cavalry at night and their sanitary habits leave a lot to be desired. They've done such damage to trees and the electricity supply that there's possum guards all over the place. And they bite and scratch like fiends if you try to catch them to ship them back to nature.
he has a cute face. I had the pleasure and honour of rescueing and rearing a baby possum no bigger than a rat. He had to be bottle fed and kept in a bag with a hot water bottle. then in a bird cage under a lamp. He grew up to be a big boistrous boy and eventually was realeased in a nature reserve. we have to have permits to keep our possums as they are protected and cant be released into the wild as they wouldnt survive.
