Strawberry Island by abirkill

Strawberry Island

A truly miserable day today in Vancouver, so this is another photo I took yesterday on my trip into Washington state.

This is taken looking east from the Deception Pass bridge in Deception Pass State Park. The water is part of the Puget Sound, with Strawberry Island visible in the middle of the photo.

Charles Wilkes, during the Wilkes Expedition of 1838-1842, found wild strawberries on the island and gave it the name Hautboy, after the variety of strawberry. In time the more common name Strawberry became official. The expedition also mapped 800 miles of Oregon coastline, as well as exploring hundreds of Pacific islands and 1,500 miles of the Antarctica coast.
beautiful beautiful shot!.....nice to remember that there ARE nice days here....since today (in WA) is a miserable one. really cool vantage point for this shot...and thanks for the history, as well.
