Wendy challenged me to go back and photograph the horses with a different lens. This time I went out with my 35mm. I tried a higher point of view, but that didn't work so I got down and let them get close. Only had so-so success with that. However, the gray mare was in a separate pen, and she was not happy about being excluded so when she stuck her head through this break in the fence line I was able to get a better composition than I do when I'm in amongst the horses. I did edit this as usual in lightroom and color efex, but then went ahead and added some textures in Topaz. I think horses and old fences look good with a bit of texture.
Wendy @farmreporter Got out my 35mm and stopped by the horse pen after paying bills this morning. The wider angle lens did work better, and I tried a variety of shots. I still have trouble composing, but I lucked out when the mare stuck her head through the fence giving me a bit of a frame. I might try another depending on the weather. Snow and cold are on their way.
I certainly like your result here, to include the composition. I often make myself shoot with only one lens for an entire month, to keep me in touch with how best to shoot with each one. It is at times difficult, but this kind of challenge does push me to focus on my composition a little more, especially when I am shooting with one of my primes (35mm, 50mm, or 85mm). Try it, even for a week, and I bet you will like what you learn.
