John and I went out early this morning to pay our respects to the fallen who have died for our country. We chose Richmond National Cemetery about three miles east of the state capital. The cemetery lies just within the fortification lines constructed by the Confederate army during its defense of Richmond during the Civil War. Three of the cemetery’s 10 acres were purchased in July 1867 from William Slater; additional acreage was subsequently purchased in 1868 and 1906. According to a plaque on a cannon barrel, there are 6529 interments and of these 5691 were unknown. The dead include those who served in the Civil War and World Wars I and II. It is closed for new burials.
It was a stirring experience to walk among these graves on a beautiful summer morning and acknowledge our debt to these fallen men and women.
I love this collage and it is so appropriate for this day. I was reading your "story" and am amazed at how many of the soldiers in this cemetery are unknown. It is great that we honor their sacrifice even if we do not know their names....God knows and He can give them an eternal reward for their sacrifice for us.
Thanks for posting this great patriotic collage today.
Very nice collage. Really gives us a good feeling for what you saw/felt. Hard to choose just one photo on a day like today.
I left you a note over on my collage. I never heard of this cemetery. I have lived in Richmond for over 20 years and still find there is so much I don't know about!
I'm so touched today to see how many of our 365ers have done beautiful Memorial Day tributes...and not only that, but they made the time to attend ceremonies. How wonderful to see that sort of patriotism and appreciation for those who fought and died for our country. Our tributes are a small exchange for that! Thank you for your beautiful pictures, and for sharing the information about the history in your corner of the states.
Re: Dill...he does seem to be having some sort of love affair with us...and it happens every summer! I'll get a phone call or email telling me he's on his way down to the house (they have a view of the street to our back door!) He was here early this morning for breakfast... He's such a regular visitor, I keep food & treats for him... do you suppose there's a correlary there... The guys wanted us to just keep a litter box for him and let him stay the night, but like good "grandparents", I like the fun without the mess! I've been known to actually carry him to his own house at night on more than one occasion! How funny is that!
I really do love these pictures of memorial day in the US. We have our Rememberance day in November (2nd sunday). So please forgive us if we did not upload any memorial pictures, but I am sure there will be loads going up in November..... Great colours and tributes from the US!
