Low Key Selfie by alophoto

Low Key Selfie

This week I was pushed to do a low key shot for Get Pushed. I was also asked to do a sexy selfie for my husband. I thought that I would try to combine the two.

I love low key shots, typically, but have yet to master the skill. It is so tough to get the lighting right and be still long enough to get a clear, well lit photo. This was my best of the bunch today, though not great in that the tank top wrinkles make me look like I have back fat (I don't). I also had to crop out my friend "Focus Bear" who I used to focus on before I got in the shot. I went over, pushed him out of the way and posed...but he sneaked into the photo. Maybe I will upload his photobomb to my alternate album.

The photobombed version can be seen here: http://365project.org/amandalomonaco/themes-challeng/2013-01-31
@siwainastromoy Thanks so much for your comments, Siw. I uploaded another more low key version at Maggiemae's suggestion.

@maggiemae You are so right...sometimes when I am editing photos the sun comes in and skews my view of it. I made it more low key and took down that bright version:). Thank you for the great feedback!!

Oh I love it!! You look so great and I dare say sexy too.I am trying but don't have one yet that I am happy enough to post. Have no fear! I am not giving up. I was also trying to do a low key selfie, great minds think alike right?

@tryeveryday He actually did not. I need to find out why. Thank you!
January 31st, 2013
They are both great shots but I think I prefer this one as it doesn't detract from the focus..you.

I admire this shot very much. I find portraiture, especially selfies, to be really difficult. Love Mr Bear Photobomber in your other shot ;o) xx

@amandalomonaco What?? Maybe he wants one you can't share on here! ;-P Just don't let your dad stumble upon it again!!

@amandalomonaco @tryeveryday you two crack me up! Great shot even if hubby doesn't like it.

@egad My dad actually did come across a sketchy photo that dad's shouldn't see of their daughters when I was showing him images on my camera. I about died! Thanks, friend!

@tryeveryday Probably. You are hilarious!!

Beautiful selfie!
February 1st, 2013
thanks for reminding me i need to do both some low keuy and high key for my photo course next week.
February 1st, 2013
Amanda you crack me up. Great selfie in b&w. Try to position yourself toward the light, would be nice to have more light in your face maybe.
February 1st, 2013
I love the crop and the low key, but agree that a bit more light on your face would be great so we could see your beautiful eyes better.
February 1st, 2013
Wow! It almost look like a charcoal! Very nice Amanda :D
February 1st, 2013
Fantastic low key selfie! I think it came out great. What did you use for your lighting?
February 1st, 2013
Wonderfully achieved :-)

Awesome selfie

@paul2782 I did darken it a bit to hide a little more. Thanks, Paul. I don't mind showing my face. I want to be a selfie expert come the end of the year.:)

@masosy Yes, maam. Low key selfies can be so nice. I need a better flashlight or lighting option, though, I think. Thanks for your great comments, lady!!

@maggiemae You are sweet. Again, thanks for the help:)!!

@pflaume Aw, thanks, Lisa!!

@worldbiking Thanks so much, Amaya!!

@jodimuli Hey, thanks, Joey!!

@swguevin Thanks so much, Sheila!!

@kbalychev Let me just say again that I love your comments. They make my day, my friend. Thank you!

@carolmw Thanks so much, Carol!! You are kind:).

@bristolrose The other I put up as a joke. It was so funny that the bear made it in the shot. How dorky!;-). Thanks so much, lady!!

@psychographer Aw, thanks sweet lady. I've made selfies my goal to perfect this year. Some of the people on here are so good at them and I want to be, too.

@istacy1011 Aw, thanks, sweet lady!!

@sailingmusic Do it. And post them up here. I want to see them, too:). I love both low and high key. What is the technique for producing high key...is it mostly in the editing?

@bardejov Good idea. My light that I was using was VERY bright and made my face look scary. I need to try a different light perhaps. Thanks for the great suggestion. They can be so awesome (low key shots) when the lighting is right.

@wendyhgill I tried to hide that mug in the dark;-). You are right. I need to better light my face next time. Thanks so much, Wendy!!

@princesicita Cool. Thanks so much, Princess!!

@emrob Thank you, Mandy. I used a flashlight and had a small lamp next to the camera, too. The flashlight was really too bright in my opinion. I prefer the old school kind that were more yellow to the new fangled lcd ones. I borrowed my son's bedside clamp lamp and may try it again with that.

@gemtumble You are sweet. Thank you, Gemma.

@abhijit Aw, thanks, Abhijit!!

I like this version also.

@soboy5 Thanks so much, Danny. I found that the lighting in the colored photos was such that I had to convert to b&w to make it look halfway decent.
February 2nd, 2013
great shot!
February 2nd, 2013
@tryeveryday Yeah, I so should have pulled out my special hearts for this one!!;-)

@lfrans Aw, thank you, Liane!!
February 2nd, 2013
@amandalomonaco heehee :-P
February 2nd, 2013
Wow, what a great self shot, Amanda. I love it and I like that it is soft and in B&W. Nicely done. You are growing so much as a photographer and your camera is part of it. Makes me want a new one also.
February 3rd, 2013
@tryeveryday I did two more last night and posted this morning. One pushed the envelope of my comfort level. Yikes! No hearts in sight!;-)

@darsphotos It has been wonderful to have the new camera, my friend. It has made a huge difference in my photography...when I can figure out how to use it. I love having more that I can do with it and not being as limited as I was before. Thank you!

Great work, Amanda!

@automaticslim This was ok, but the others were way better. This was my preliminary shot/first go at it. Thanks, Andy!
