Blue Lagoon Thermal Pools, Grindavik, Iceland

Back to Iceland for my final Sunday visit. I shall though continue to post some of my travel pics on a Sunday as I have been enjoying the opportunity to review them.

This is a photo of the Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa at Grindavik on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwestern Iceland, not far from the main airport at Keflavik. The hotel and spa sit right in the centre of a huge boulder-strewn lava field with a geothermal power station right next door. The power station is visible in the background of this photo. The volcanic origin boulders come about halfway up some of the hotel windows. The spa itself is human-made using water vented from a nearby volcano that passes through turbines and then is discharged into the lagoon for recreational use.

This was our last day in Iceland and the hotel was an obvious choice because of its proximity to the airport. It felt very unsafe and unstable for all its relatively luxurious trappings. My concerns were borne out by our experience of a 3.0+ earthquake soon after we arrived and countless lesser quakes in the 24 hours we stayed there ( https://icelandmonitor.mbl.is/news/nature_and_travel/2017/07/27/over_500_earthquakes_in_reykjanes_swarm/).

Reykjanes Peninsula is again experiencing quakes at the moment: https://www.volcanodiscovery.com/earthquakes/reykjanes.html
Stunning! I would love to soak in those waters, although the idea of the earthquakes is definitely a downer. So glad you survived it.

What a lovely scene, love the colour of the water.

Glad you survived the quake.

I hope you weren't affected by the recent earthquake in Victoria. My daughter is in Victoria and phoned me as the earthquake happened to say they had been evacuated from the building. No damage done though.

Great place. We were in Iceland 2012 but didn’t have time to visit the Lagoon. It’s a reminder of how fragile earth is.

In the recent earthquake here, the apartment building I am in swayed for a good ten seconds and we had to evacuate until everything was given the Ok to return. No damage here but in Chapel Street not so far from here, there was quite a lot of damage. Betty's Burgers and Shakes was damaged and there have been a few jokes about only making shakes for a while! @onewing

It looks like a wonderful bathing spot, but it's a pity it can be dangerous
