The clock in The Block

It used to be known as Carpenter’s Lane, but it came to be as 'The Block' because of the pre-Victorian Football League matches tradition where women walked one way around the block and men walked the other, 'doing the block'. The name was changed officially as a result of petitions by the shop owners.
