Blackheath is a suburb located near the highest point of the Blue Mountains, between Katoomba and Mount Victoria in New South Wales.

After crossing the Blue Mountains in 1815 and returning from Bathurst, Governor Lachlan Macquarie renamed the settlement as "Black-Heath", in reference to the colour and texture of the native shrubbery in the area.

So old school with the edit and text.

@amandal it is an historic country town in the Blue Mountains - fabulous to wander around - need to go back

It does have an interesting name - reminds me of something that Rowan Atkinson acted in!

@maggiemae I added info about the name above Maggiemae - an historic town

I know people love to visit the Blue Mountains. Is this something of a tourist destination? I just wonder if there are some interesting shops or made over to house small museums in the old buildings.

@Weezilou The Mountains are a wonderful place to visit - you would need at least a week to explore and there would still be more to see. Besides the main town of Katoomba where you can see the 3 sisters and a beautiful vista out across the ranges there are lovely towns like Leura and Blackheath with beautiful gardens and bush walks and parks as well as wonderful shops and museums. I love going there and could spend hours/days exploring

Cool signs

OK, my question was only about the town of Blackheath. I've been to Katoomba and seen the Three Sisters. Leura sounds quite familiar, too. We've twice visited friends in Sydney and they took us up there, but of course we didn't have a lot of time to linger as you happily can do!

It looks fun -- I like the capture of the signs which convey something about the little community.

Great b&w Annie, very Aussie.

Wonderful contrasts in this shot, Annie. I have been there, but not since I was 10!!

@annied OK...this is getting funny! I must ask some questions of friends. When we arrived in NS, some of our first best friends included the nieco of one of the top 10 Rhododendron specialists in the world! They were just arriving back from a trip to Oz. Dick Steele has since died, but I heard him speak a few times in Lunenburg. I long ago discovered that the world is a very small place if you just find the one small connecting word!

@Weezilou the world is a small place indeed - the mountains are the perfect climate for rhodos and Blackheath has the most amazing garden full of them and azaleas - it is stunning at any time but beautiful in Spring http://rhodogarden.org.au/

Great capture, like this

The name is a bit weird but the place makes for a great b&w picture.

This sounds like one of those places that time forgot... and all the better for that! Glad you enjoyed your visit.

Love it in b/w.

Awesome b/w!

A stunning B/W shot Annie ! but the signs have stirred my imagination -- what a trio to be next to one another !! -- my little story goes as follows !! "Having stayed in the cabin for a few days holiday , he purchased beef sausage for tea from the butcher next door . Unfortunately he under-cooked them and became ill . So he had to "dash" to the Pharmacy for a cure " !! Sorry for that feeble attempt --lol !!
