Forest walk and a few thoughts about my ancestry

Sometimes when I walk through a forest or walk along the shoreline (places where there's no obvious signs of modern life) I think about how this place would have looked 500 years ago... what would life have been like for the people who lived there back then?... Some of these thoughts are without a doubt triggered by my search in my genealogy.

Through the years I have been doing a fair bit of genealogy, and I have been able to trace my ancestry back for hundreds of years. I come from a long ancestry line of hard working people, farmers and fishermen, and the one thing that stands out crystal clear to me is how how hard life must have been back then... hard work had a whole different meaning compared to our modern way of life. There were no medicine, so many lives were lost to disease and injuries that we have no problems in treating today... I remember in particular one story, that I came across, where a family lost 5 of their 6 childen (aged 3 to 14 years) within only 4 days due to diphtheria... I can't even begin to imagine how devastating that must have been.

So I'm left with a humbled feeling thinking about how priviledged we are today...

I often do the same. Only fairly recently have films and TV dramas really reflected the gritty existence faced by many in, for example, ancient Rome.
A nice shot as well.
