When your thoughts take off in a totally different direction...

The temperature today dropped down to minus 4 degrees Celcius, and this afternoon it started hailing quite heavily.
So when I started writing down the headline for this photo I typed down these four letters "Hail"... and with a blink of an eye my mind took off in a completely different direction, and I instantly thought "NO! I can't write that!”.

Even now, almost 74 years after the German occupation of Denmark ended, we still feel sensitive about being reminded of the Nazis. Their salute was spelled “Heil”, but it’s pronounced the same way as the word “Hail”, which is why I reacted this way.
The German occupation of Denmark only lasted 5 years, but the war (World War 2) and the occupation have left a profound mark on the Danish people, that has been passed on down through the generations.
I do not dwell on what happened back then nor on the stories, that I have been told by my late grandparents (they were newlyweds during the occupation, and my grandfather helped the resistance in transporting goods), but I think it's important not to forget - and that we should reflect upon, why things were able to go so wrong.
Freedom and peace are probably the most precious things we have, and should never be taken for granted.

Gear used: Olympus OM-D E-M5 + M42 to micro 4/3 Adapter + Pentaflex Auto Color f1.8/50mm.
Words are so powerful. I did not realize the power in this one. I read the Wikipedia article on the salute. It's horrifying! Thank you for sharing.
