Sharp-Shinned Hawk by bjywamer

Sharp-Shinned Hawk

This hawk turned up on the trellis in our backyard this morning. We have never had a hawk on the property before, as far as we know. It sat here for a very long time. I tried to identify it online with Merlin ID but couldn't seem to. So, we called a birder friend of ours and sent her the photo. Turns out it is a sharp-shinned hawk. I have been hoping for a good hawk photo as we have been driving in our area but they always fly away before I can get a shot. So, this was a real treat! Second photo I will post today is of the hawk looking straight at me.

I love seeing the hawks but have your problem of getting them to stay put for a shot - you did well~

@milaniet Can't really take any credit because this particular hawk was extremely accommodating! LOL I think the problem when out driving is that our truck scares them away too quickly. Guess I just need to go sit and wait in places we have seen them. Our 12 year-old grandson got a photo today (on his first time using his family's camera) of a red-tailed hawk. He was so excited that he called me to tell me and later, sent the photo to me after he had edited it some. Wasn't bad for a first time!
