This particular location was the site of Edmonton's first public library. In 1923 The City along with the Carnegie Corporation of New York funded its construction. It waa rather grand looking building with large columns marking the entrance. Several large pillars on the inside and a large skylight over the main reading room.
In 1968 the city sold the land to Alberta Government Telephone Company who built Edmonton's "twin towers".
The North Tower, the smaller one in the background is 24 stories tall and was completed in 1969. The South Tower is 34 stories tall and was completed in 1971.
The South Tower for many years had Vista 33 which was an indoor observation deck that offered a spectacular view of the city. It unfortunately has been closed now for many years.
The towers sit above McCauley Plaza which is a shopping plaza that is completely underground .
