The latest recreation in Fort Edmonton Park is this replica of the Capitol Theatre. The Capitol was a landmark on Jasper Avenue from 1917-1972.
Built by Famous Players the Capitol Theatre was the first silent movie house in Edlmonton. They installed equipment for the "talkies" in 1929. The theatre was remodelled in 1938. this included the installing the famous 2000 light marquee.
The theatre was demolished in 1972 to make way for a 22 storey movie complex and office tower.
This fall the park is going to offer three live theatre plays at the Capitol Theatre here in the park
Beautiful composition on this! I loved the old movie theatres. Went to so many movies when I was young and even worked in one for awhile. How things change! Nice pic.
Very nice- picturesque building. When they rebuilt it, did they restore the 2000 light marquee as well? I hope! Nice shot- honors the building very nicely.
@eudora To a certain point it is. A smaller versioin that the original and the box seats are just a false front instead of the real things. But it looks very good
@karenann That is so true now somany people tend to stay at home and watch things that way. Plus I don't think that the movies are as good today as they once were
brilliant idea for the money makers. tear down the old building, build a new one, larger and better with more shops so more people can come in, thus making more money; then build a replica because people get nostalgic for the old building and make more money. yay for the entrepreneurs! in any case, it is a great shot. well done.
