Sign Challenge..............One painted sign

Just one more sign shot before I move on to the weeklky theme. This is one of my favorite old painted signs in the downtown area. It is on the side of the H V. Shaw building. Harry Shaw built this for his Edmonton cigar Factory back in the early 1900's. At the time it was one of edmonton's largest employers.
I love how this one is in such great shape after so many years.
Looking forward to the theme this week as Edmonton has a lot of great facades on some very old buildings
It is amazing that these signs take us back in history just as much as the buildings. Great capture.

Very impressive signs, I love the worn out look of them
September 27th, 2011
Great heritage capture! I like how the newer building in the background and the steel bins in front of the turn-of-the-century building shows how time has just passed on by and left the Shaw building in its wake.

It's great sign not only for being in such good shape and its history, but also because of what it advertises! Corn syrup is not in good standing right now!

@mittens Thanks. I think that is one of the many things about these old painted signs is the character they have to them

@jenrobcarr I am not sure what year the signs were painted. It ispossible that they may have been painted after he sold the building

@bkbinthecity It's actually high fructose corn syrup which is used primarily as a sweetener and a preservative. It's used predominantly in highly processed foods like store-bought salad dressing, cereal, etc. etc. The reason it's not good for you is that it is generally a sugar on top of sugar which leads to obesity. In cereal for example, there are already other sugars in place, and the fact that most grains are carbohydrates that also act like sugar in your body, you end up with triple the amount of sugars to digest. The body tends to store that rather than get rid of it, so all those extra pounds in the middle- most of them come from excess sugar. That's my short layman's explanation, but there are plenty of certified nutritionists who could explain it better than I! Corn syrup as the only sweetener in something is probably not bad- it's the fact that it gets added in with all the other sweeteners that makes it a no-no!

@bkbinthecity and this is a great shot, love the muted colours, it looks like morning and reminds me of the Tropicana adverts we get in the UK where the New York light is very white.
