This is my first shot wor the Facades theme. took this one on Whyte Avenue. In this shot there are three historical buildings. From left to right there is the Commercial Hotel, which has a nice neon sign. It was built in 1912-13. It is home to Blues on Whyte. Next is the Princess Theatre. This single screen theatre has its landmark neon sign. this theatre was built in 1915 and is still showing movies to this day. Last is the Gainer Block which was built in 1902 by John Gainer as a store for his southside meat packing plant. Gainers was around Edmonton for many years.
It is nice that all of these buildings are still standing and are in use to this day
Great shot and amazing you start of with a 3 in 1 deal. Love the old style theatre. Do they play modern movies or older style movies? I ask because our performing arts centre is doing a Hitchock series for almost 2 months and most of the shows are booked out. Great, considering you can get most of the movies on DVD.
3 in 1- not bad!! I like the history behind these buildings. And I like that you shot them later in the day so that we could see the neon signs in action.
@bkbinthecity it was the CIBC which I guess is right across the street from your photo. My mom says she'd love to see your photos from that side of the street!
there is a place i've been to in the states, somewhere in the east coast if i remember correctly, where no cars are allowed to park, stand, linger right in front of the historic buildings similar to these ones (converted into stores and retail outlets but the vintage facades were notoriously maintained/retained). it is so that if people, especially the tourists, want to take photos, they can do so without the cars obstructing the beautiful view. still, this is a nice shot and i especially love the middle building, with the sunlight (sunset?) hitting the top. very quaint.
@summerfield Thanks for the comment. I love places like this and I am glad that there are cities around that care enough to preserve buildings like this
These are great facades, though I notice you have too many dashes in your tag so I'm guessing it won't get entered in the weekly theme challenge. Maybe you can edit it to fix that. It's certainly is perfect for the theme.
Love the historical comments added in.
