Our tour continues south on 97 Street as we make our way to the corner of 106 Avenue where we find the Hull Block. Built in 1914 by William Roper Hull. It was built as a retail and apartment building complex. This format has remained even to this day.
From 1915-60 the main floor was home to a couple of Drug Stores. In the 1970's it sat vacant and fell into need of some serius repairs after being neglected for many years.
In 2002 it received a major renovation and became home to a new business as part of the Chinese community. The main floor remains a retail outlet and the top two floors are home to many tenants.
An interesting note is that during the summer months the roof is home to a garden which is used by many of the tenants
Today it is a wonderful historic landmark in the heart of Chinatown
Tomorrow one more shot as we come to the end of our tour
What a great history for this building! It's been renovated beautifully, I think. Love that there's a garden on the roof and gets used by the tenants. Beautiful capture of this, Brian . . great pov of the building.
i have missed finding out all these interesting tidbits of info about edmonton. very cool! and of course now next time I pass by this building I will think of this picture! neat shot!
Great history, my curiosity wants to see the roof top garden and view from the garden, must be fabulous for those tenants. A great capture of a lovely building
I always thought it was strange how a beautiful building like this can be left to fall into ruins for years and its not till it's in almost ruins the people start to see the value and beauty it has. What a beautiful architecture this has. Happy they fixed it up and are using it!
I really love it when historic buildings are repurposed and renovated giving them new life. And how cool that the tenants can have a garden in the middle of the city!! Nice shot of a great building.
