Last night on the way to dinner I saw that the lights on the marquis of the Garneau Theatre were finally working. For several weeks the lights were completely out or a portion of them would be. So as we were walking past it I knew that I had to take this chance to get the photo I had been waiting for.
The Garneau is one of two single screen theatres left in Edmonton. Most of them have gone to the multi-screen format. This theatre was built in the 1940's and is still in use today. They usually do not show the newest and latest but they usually show movies by independent film makers or host film festivals. Sometimes they will feature older movies that were the classics of there day.
We had a very nice evening with our friends and once again today it is a busy day so I am posting a picture first thing this morning as I don't know what time we will be back home this evening.
What a grand (no pun intedended!) catch. Yes, sometimes we need to get our photos when we can. Would love this old theatre . . I'm not fond of the big multi-plexes. Well done, Brian.
I prefer the old movie theaters..we have one here in our little town. it has a capacity for 4 showings at the same time frame..still we can chooose without driving into the next larger town which now has a ciniplex
What a great night shot of this "grand" theater. We used to go to the only single-plex theater in Waikiki about 10 years ago, but they closed in about 8 years ago now. We were usually 2 of about 20 people there, so you can guess that there would be a more profitable venture for that Waikiki location. It was still sad when they closed it though. Nice remembrance and a special photo, Brian. It'll be a classic soon. :D
@bobg This is near the Univerity of Alberta. The name Garneau is the name of the nieghbourhood which was named after a man by the name of Laurent Garneau who at one time owned much of the land in this area
