Yesterday I posted a picture of the Citadel Theatre. Today I thought it would be nice to show the original building.
This is the old Salvation Army Citadel which was built in 1925. The Army used this building until 1964. When they moved out the theatre group moved in. As I mentioned yesterday they decided to name their group the Citadel Theatre based on the building they were moving into.
When the Theatre moved out it under went some renovations and in 1978 it began a long history of different tenants.
Today it is home to the Starlite Lounge which has been located here for several years now.
Of interest to Melody is the connection this building has to her family. Both of her parents when they came to Edmonton in 1958 were serving as officers in the Salvation Army and so this building has a long personal history to them both. A couple of years ago we had the opportunity to go inside and take a look around which for her parents brought back a lot of good memories
What a fascinating history this building has--especially the personal memories you, Melody and her parents have of it! The Salvation Army has helped so many people--I'm glad the building is still standing and that the theater kept its name. Nice photo, too--I like the contrast between old and new buildings.
mind reader, i was wondering yesterday what this building looked like. thanks for posting. the salvation army does a lot of good work. decades ago, there was a fire where we were living and they were there before the fire trucks.
I love that you told us about the personal history attached to this great site. Has the inside been "modernized" or does it still retain it's old-world charm?? Nicely done, once again.
@sunnygreenwood I was going to take a shot of the inside of the building from yesterdays shot but I thought this would make a more interesting one. I will still go back and take some indoor shots from the other one
This is an interesting old building. The brickwork looks a bit different from what you usually see. I t was interesting reading the history of this building.
@pwallis Thanks I took a couple of close up shots that gave a good look at some of the detail but I liked this one better because of the tree and the new buidings
@vernabeth I do think the brick work might be what they call clinker brick which is basically left over pieces of bricks from the brick yard. We do have a few buildings like this in Edmonton as we had a couple of brick yards operating in the early days of our city
