On July 31, 1987 the face of Edmonton was changed forever. A tornado rated an F4 came threw the eastern edges of the city. It lasted for 1 hour. When it was over 27 people lost their lives and hundreds were left homeless and the total damge would end up adding up to over 300 million dollars.Today marks the 25th anniversary of this event. Although I did not know any of the people who died I did know others who lost their homes and whose lives were turned upside down
Todays photos show first the tornado. I was given this photo from a friend who worked in the industrial area that was hit. He managed to take this before it reached the area he was in. The trees make up a memorial garden in the Evergreen Trailer park where so much of the damage was done and 15 of the 27 victims lived. The trees were planted in 1988 one year after the disaster. There are 27 trees one for each of the victims in total who died.
The statue was erected in Hermitage Park in Clareview which is a neighborhood in northeast Edmonton which was also hit hard. It shows people comforting each other.
So this is my tribute to all those who lost their lives and all of families who were affected by this horrible disaster
What a wonderful tribute, Brian. The collage tells the story! So hard to express one's feelings for such a terrible tragedy. You did a beautiful job here.
This is a very nice remembrance Brian! I hope that the victims and the surviving people have been able to rebuild their lives. The statue is particularly beautiful.
How tragic! I don't remember that and never realized there were tornados in your area, especially F4. I guess they can happen any where. You've done a fantastic job in putting together this collage as a tribute.
Wonderful tribute. I myself witnessed the power of an F4 on May 31, 1985 - Barrie tornado outbreak here in Ontario. It is something you will never forget.
your collage tells a sad story in Edmonton's history for the day of July 31, 1987. so glad to the that 27 trees were planted which have grown up to add to this tribute. the sculpture is beautiful..nice tribute Brian.
