... not the actual rules, but the "rules" of photography. Our winner from last week, Todd, wants you to break the rules and try something new.

The weekly theme is a great Idea and an excellent opportunity to put thought towards a subject that may be rather foreign.
Following that idea I would like to propose 'Breaking the Rules'.
To quote Bill Brandt "Photography is not a sport therefore there are no rules".

Breaking the rules of composition:
- Rule of thirds - centered objects
- Careful framing - careless framing.
- Looking room - Looking room behind subject.
- Positive and negative space - excessive
- Even Horizons/lines - uneven/tilted horizons
- Image sharpnes - Increased ISO
- Sharp Focus - No focus point
- Arms/limbs coming into frame
- Cutting eyes.

How to enter

To make it a little easier for me when picking the final 5, I'll need all entrants to specifically state which rule they are breaking.

If you wish to enter the theme this week, please tag your photo (on the edit/organise screen) with the tag theme-breakrules.

Entry Guidelines

Entry to this theme starts on Monday 23rd June and will accept entries until Sunday night (23:59 GMT 30th June). 5 finalists will be chosen next week and we'll start voting on Wednesday. Entries must have been taken and uploaded within the time frame only! Entries outside of the date range will not be accepted in to the final 5.

Whats "cutting eyes"?
June 24th, 2014
@maggiemae cutting an eye in half using the edge of the framed shot, gives the shot an uncomfortable feel.

Sorry I have to ask what is "looking room"?
June 24th, 2014
I am sure I do half that stuff most of the time hahahahahaha

What do you mean by arms/limbs coming into frame. Does it apply only to the photographers arm/limbs or can it be others?

Wasn't originally planning to make this a break the rules photo but when I got it lined up I liked the light coming in from the top right, the dark in the top left and the texture at the bottom so I ended up with a near centered focal area...oh well, them's the breaks.

So this wasn't originally going to be a theme photo and my original plan was to throw the picture out but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. It's a beautiful shot of my girls and I do hate that it's blurry, but it was (in my opinion) still worth keeping and I actually still love how it turned out! :)

I took this over the weekend, and by happy accident it seems to break quite a few rules. It has limbs sliced off, body parts missing, the composition isnt great at all although I guess the buckets are in the bottom third... but given all of that, I still really like it...

Ok, having never been a member of a camera-club I am unaware of any "rules", but I feel that this must break some of them somewhere, somehow, but my rule is "If it looks OK to me, it probably is OK"

(... and as I don't even know how to post the picture here, what hope is there for me? Just a born loser!)

Okay, let me say up front, I've just come back from trying to shop at a mall which is in a state of total turmoil due to renovation ( you know the type, permanent inconvenience for temporary improvement ) so I am not in the best of moods but, I've just been looking through the photos posted for this challenge and I've got to say I am once again gob smacked by the number of people who haven't bothered to mention what rule they think they have broken with their photo, even though the host specifically asked people to do so.

I mean maybe they assume it is so obvious it doesn't need to be mentioned but for some of us, probably less expert than them, it isn't all that obvious and the host specifically asked them to do it, in any case. Okay, rant over and all, as my kids would say, over a first world problem.
Time to go pour a glass of wine and chill out.
