Giant's Meccano Set

On my way back from North Shields I came across this site tonight. No idea whatsoever, what they are building but it reminded me of a giant Meccano set - with fairy lights on nonetheless! Lots of activity on site even though it was gone 8 pm. Hmm! Anyone local have a clue what this is? On Hadrian Road just before you get to the viaduct.

You've beaten me to this one. I spotted it on my return home from the tunnel. They build lots of oil rig structures down there so it could be something like that.

I think @cliffs is probably right - it was so massive that it may well be something to do with oil riggs. But I love @johnnyfrs idea of a shace ship launch pad (see the trail shooting off to the left? One just took off) or @adeakinyede idea about a research lab - [insert evil laughter here]
