For the uninitiated: as in Byker Wall. A social housing development from the early 70s just to the right of the picture named after this part of town. First attempt at light trails - desperately need some gloves! It's freezing tonight and I needed both hands to stabilise my little tripod on the railings. Think the feeling in my hands has just about returned now :-) Any comments or tips welcome (on the pic not necessarily how to keep the fingers warm)!
Thank you all for looking and commenting - you are all truly amazing :-)
May not be able to post tomorrow. Have a long train journey though in the evening so ample time to catch up with all your lovely shots! Will need it tomorrow no doubt!!
@filsie65 haha, just spotted yours! great job, but I bet you stayed warm in the process :-) Definitely taking the camera, but expecting a fraught day in the health service, so not sure what things will be like...
@woot Thank you very much! Not sure what works best. Tried a small aperture and set ISO to 200 but camera did the rest. Wasn't a lot of traffic and I would've liked a bit more.
I think the exposure is spot on. You might want to have a vehicle or two included or maybe an emergency vehicle; there's a Fire Station nearby. A (powerful) flash could help here. You might want to consider the area near to the Hancock Museum. You need to keep warm alright but what about Sergey Parohodov?
@cliffs Thanks Cliff! Haha, I know, no comparison to Sergey's temperatures!
Had one shot in the other direction with two buses, but it was against the wind and blurred because of that (and not in a good way). Mujst check out around Hancock. Would you use a slow flash setting or filler flash? Just have the one on my camera and haven't played around with it much yet.
Great shot! Cool light trails. I have been trying driving gloves, but I sometimes need to take off one glove to take pictures. Please let me know if someone else comes up with something better to keep your hands warm.
@daisy Thank you :-) I'm usually not a glove kind of person, it has to be well below freezing before I put them on, but having them exposed like this is awful...I did ask for thinner fingertip-less gloves for Christmas. Will let you know if they work out!
When I read your title - I starting singing 'Byker, Byker Grove!' ,,, ha, talk about a misspent youth int he UK!! ;o)
Nice trails!
For these type of shots, a tripod is highly recommended. That also helps in that you can keep the ISO down at 100 if you so wish. It looks like you are photographing from an overpass, your camera flash won't help you much there.
@sixthblade Hahaha, I've now had the theme tune in my head all night!! Classic Tv series! Thanks for the advice! I only have a small table top tripod so far, which does a great job, but the railings of the overpass were a bit precarious, hence having to hold onto it. Who knows what Christmas might bring ;-)
