Sur les Routes de Samarcande

Was the exhibition we went to at the Institut de Monde Arabe. Subtitled marvels of silk and gold, it was an absolute feast for the eyes: sumptuously embroidered chapans (coats) and footwear, jewellery, beautifully painted and decorated horse equipment, intricately patterned suzanis (sort of a throw) and carpets.

Breakfast in the hotel was a little chaotic - the usual buffet, but things were starting to run out by the time we got there and L was initially a little grumpy with it all. Took the RER into town to see the exhibition with P and L, stopping off first at Noir for proper hipster coffee for L. Apparently it was superb (I don't drink it).

After the exhibition, we walked back over the Pont de Sully to try out the Sully brasserie we'd spotted on emerging from the métro. As we were walking, I thought I felt something thrown at my back, but on looking behind me, couldn't see anything. But at the brasserie, when I took my waterproof off to hang it up, I found the hood covered in brown goo - some huge bird had pooed on me. Had to spend a good 10 mins in the loo washing it off, and soaking the bathroom floor in the process.

Luckily the food here soon cheered things - another salade niçoise, beautifully presented, and another tarte tatin. Dave's goats cheese salad was very good too and he had another café gourmand. W and E joined us also, having been wandering the left bank.

Got the RER back after for a welcome nap before heading out again 3 mins round the corner to the Saturday bal with the stellar line-up of Naragonia, Ciac Boum and La Machine. Danced a hell of a lot as the music and musicians were just stunning - especially to Ciac Boum and their high energy Poitou dances - knees coping better with their vigorous but even dance styles. The aspirin I'd downed helped also. The Bath crowd also turned up which was nice. Several dancers however (not in our party) had terrible BO which wasn't so nice.

Went on till gone 1 and we returned for nibbles in our room, getting crisp crumbs all over the duvet.

All good things.
