The burghers of Calais

Very busy day at work today, loads to do in three days. But darn it, I still managed to rush out at lunchtime to do some Wenlock-spotting. Managed to complete the red stroll - round Westminster and the South Bank. The routes are designed to take you round interesting bits of London and landmarks and this was no exception. Things I saw that I hadn't seen before / known about - even though I've worked in this little corner of central London for 10 years: an unexpectedly fab view of the London Eye from the back of County Hall, a twee bakery/tea room serving tea and cake in bijou china (actually in County Hall), and a ceramic flower installation in front of Parliament (temporary I think).

Here are Rodin's burghers of Calais in front of the Houses of Parliament's Victoria Tower. In 1347, the burghers offered themselves as hostages to Edward III after he'd besieged Calais for almost a year.

Another prom tonight with the BBC SO and Osmo Vanska. An evening of two halves - a scintillating Egmont overture and Mozart clarinet concerto - but a slightly less diverting second half - Delius (rather dull) and Nielsen's 5th symphony - good but felt hot and tired through it.
