Thank you so much for all the good wishes yesterday on my Great Grandson to be - who has still not made an appearance!
I'm sort of stuck in the house until my back goes back to it's own definition of normal. Even I am tired of taking flower pictures - until the next new bloom. So I decided to share another piece of my family lore. This bottle belonged to my Great Grandfather. So we are talking about a man that was born forever ago. Apparently he was quite the dapper guy, always wearing suits and bringing something for his daughter's children, one of whom was my Mother, when he visited. As he got older he divided his time and lived some of the year with my Grandmother. The inside of this bottle is lined with his cigar wrappers. I have no idea how, or why, he did this. But it has been passed down and now belongs to me. I often wonder, having sons, what will become of all the family treasures. Or even if it is a treasure - or just an old bottle with colorful labels on the inside.
The Architect could care less. The Writer is more sentimental and listens a little more to the old stories. Somebody needs to know that this belonged to Joseph Bolendar, father of Florence Holloway, who was the mother of my mother, Anna Jane Custer.
Will any of the young generation care about our treasures Cathy? I often see folk on programes like Antiques Roadshow & people with all their treasures. The experts give a valuation , sometimes a lot of money but the owners usually say , we would never sell ! I bet the next generation down will ! Sad really.
I wonder how how lined that narrow bottle with cigar wrappers?
It's lasted this long, it's journey is what will keep it looked after. Those cigar papers are probably worth more than the bottle, together they are a piece of art.
Great piece of family memorabilia and it definitely should keep its place of importance. My advice would be to make sure it's always on display somewhere; once things like this get tucked away out of sight they vanish from the collective memory and often get tossed when the time comes to go through belongings. I've made sure to put little labels on things like this indicating the provenance and a bit of their history. You could tuck a note inside this one. And cultivate your writer son. There is usually one person in a family who'll step up to the plate and take over preservation of the family history. You could do your bit by making sure every bit of written or photographed material is carefully marshalled together and by recording stuff yourself that you think should be remembered. But I'm sure you do that already...
when antiquing, I often come across lovely paintings of someone's ancestors. It saddens me - those paintings meant something to the people who sat for them and should be hanging in their descendants homes. I suspect many of my belongings will end up in a junk shop one day! Love Robin's idea of including a bit of the items history for the new owner who will love it as much as you do.
Have you tried to rub it Cathy. Who knows, maybe a genie might come out. This piece is surely a treasure and you have captured it so wonderfully well. Love the info.
@happypat Hard to say Pat. I'm positive that my oldest son could care less. @gerry Thanks Gerry. Hope is it around for a lot longer. @jenniferruge Thanks Jennifer. @peadar Thank you Peter. @sugarmuser I have wondered about that Sharon. I don't know anything about cigars. @maggiemae Great suggestion Maggie. i will tell them all there is a Genie waiting inside. @aurorajane Thank you. @girlie I have actually been meaning to start something like an inventory. Their are lots of things of some value at least. @timandelke Can't you just see all of our old "photos" ending up somewhere someday brought together by the "365" tag. @aleksandra Thank you Aleksandra. I think it might have some significance. @sailingmusic Thank you Myrna. @grammyn Thank you Katy. I should post it somewhere and see if other people have done what he did. @swguevin Thanks Sheila. @worthitall Thank you Rashella.
