The Bee in Flight by cdonohoue

The Bee in Flight

No Baby. Corgi in crate. Back a little better but no bending or getting on the ground for a shot. No inspiration.....

So I went outside and at least got something I haven't gotten before - a bee in flight around the Loosestrife. I have trouble with movement - my hands and the object I am trying to capture in motion. So any hints would really be appreciated. I am trying to shoot with a faster shutter speed but still not getting the clarity that I would like. So since I am lacking in inspiration I am hoping that you all will have something to say that will help me practice a shot of something in motion.

A friend is going to pick me up for Book Club tonight. This is a really wild bunch of Presbyterian "girls," mostly in our 60's, that get together once a month and go out to dinner and have a few drinks and laugh. Mostly, we laugh. Several of them I have no memory of not knowing. That is what happens to those of us that live in the same part of the world where we grew up. If we get around to it, we discuss the book that we picked the prior month. This month's choice was "Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet" by Jamie Ford. And it was a good one in a sweet and simple way.

Sounds like you are having quite a week. I hope your grandson comes soon, your dog is okay and your back gets to feeling better. Great capture of this bee in flight.

I love the fact that you get together with your girlfriends. I do the same on a weekly basis with four of my friends. We've been doing it for roughly 25 years and I think it keeps us sane ;o) This is a fantastic shot. The flowers are all pretty sharply focused. I don't think there's any way of getting clarity in a moving object...feel free anyone to disagree with me on that one as I'm no expert. I rather like the motion you've captured xx

@jenniferruge Thanks Jennifer. At least my back is coming around.
@psychographer I think women keep other women sane also. A totally different vibe than guys at guy level. I see other folks shots with great clarity and always wonder if I just don't have fine enough equipment.

Fabulous capture

Cathy This a fav for me the Flower Is so pretty and the bee just about to descend. Gerry.

This is a great shot Cathy, I recommend a tripod, I rarely take a good well focused shot without one, especially with the size of camera we use, and a remote shutter, I have a wireless one but I prefer to use the one with the lead as its instant every time. Heres hoping your evening took your mind off of all the other things on your mind right now : )

Wonderful capture with great DOF! I love the composition too. That new grandbaby will come when he is ready! How frustrating is it to have him calling the shots?! ;~}

fabulous image

Such pretty detail in the flowers, a bee about to land (not easy to capture) - and then behind everything the shadowy shapes of more loosestrife, all making a most attractive picture.

It's a great capture...

Very nice...

Hope things are quite soon changing for the better, Cathy!

Your camera is a very good one so I will be interested to see if someone can give hints, my only one is to put the camera auto on to "moving object" and choose repetitive shots over 10 secs. Nice to hear about your book club! Ours can't include wine as some will travel over an hour to the meeting and most half an hour! Pity!

Wonderful mid flight action, I couldn't catch that with mine I don't think! Hope your back better soon!
June 14th, 2012
This is a beautiful capture, Cathy! Hope you are back to normal very soon! Take care!

Lovely shot
June 14th, 2012
Nicely caught; you've done well with this shot in the circumstances. I do the same as @maggiemae but those who have a tripod recommend using one for these sorts of shots. I can't imagine being able to follow bees around very successfully with a tripod, though.

This looks plenty clear to me - capturing flying insects is difficult and the slightest breeze can start a flower swaying back and forth.

Great action shot! wonderful capture of this bee in flight and the colors are fabulous as well... I hope you are feeling better now.

Beautiful level of focus
June 15th, 2012
Lovely composition. I have the same problem with focus, especially if I'm using the zoom lens.

Beautiful! Fav

I guess good things come to those who wait! Baby Mason is taking his time! Love the bee in flight, the motion of the wings. And book club sounds divine... I've lived in the same house for the past 30 years, and have some of the dearest friends... love spending time with the 'girls'!

Great capture! Beautiful!
June 15th, 2012
Fabulous! Fav! I tried this so know how hard these guys are to capture...no luck here so I am impressed!!!
June 15th, 2012
great shot! and thanks for all the updates!!!!
June 15th, 2012
Beautiful capture. I was so happy when I managed this some months ago.
June 15th, 2012
Wonderful capture! You can see the motion in the bee's wingsl! I note that you used quite a fast speed on this, but if you want to go faster, try increasing your ISO as that will give you greater light, and therefore speed. Maybe an ISO 200 or even 400? I have used some pretty high ISOs without the noise being really obvious such as this one, which was done at 1250.. http://365project.org/aleksandra/365/2012-05-31. This will also allow you to go to a narrower aperture, say an f8 so that you can get a wider area in focus (I used an f13 for this one). I'm not an expert in any way, but have found these small changes to increase my hit rate of focussed macro shots. Hope you have a great time at your book club!

Lovely Well-timed shot!!

@megsy Thanks Megsy.
@gerry Gerry thank you. You are always so kind and supportive and I truly appreciate it.
@lorraineb I do have a tripod that I use for night work - long shutter speeds. But if I am chasing something on the "fly" that is pretty difficult for me. I am going to look into the remote shutter and glad to hear that you like the attached one. It is next on my list,
@grammyn I know Katy. We are just into the ridiculous.
@jenrobcarr Thanks Jennifer.
@tishpics Thanks Patricia. I did like how the Loosestrife showed up.
@sugarmuser Thank you Sharon.
June 15th, 2012
@peadar Thanks Peter.
@lyno Thank you Lyn. Back is really better today.
@maggiemae We usually stay in our own little area and nobody has over one drink. It is just one of traditions. They are quite the support network.
@happypat Thanks Pat. I am just looking for one of those really clear shots I see. They have to know something I don't .
@marlboromaam Thank you Maggie. Hope you got you computer fixed.
@doorknee71 Thank you DAwn.
@girlie That is the problem. I read somebody talking about "faster glass" lenses. Those are probably the ones way over my head.
@timandelke That is the truth. Summer breezes are not always my friend.
@princesicita Thank you Princess.
@melorac Thank you Carole.
June 15th, 2012
@cdonohoue No, not yet. Haven't heard from them yet.

Amazing capture!
June 16th, 2012
Beautiful bee shot!! Your book club sounds like my bunco group--we mostly laugh, and occasionally we play a round or two :)
June 17th, 2012
Great shot - the detail and colour are great!
June 17th, 2012
