This butterfly looks a little tattered, but it looks like he's smiling! When I finally found this butterfly online, the pic said Question Mark and it didn't have any information. That didn't help me very much, but tonight I bought a Field Guide to Insects and Spiders of North America! I found the butterfly and guess what the name is? It's actually called Question Mark! LOL! The info says there is a question mark in silver on the hind wings. I can't see it in my pic or theirs. It must be small.
I also bought a Wildflowers of Tennessee book tonight. I'm like a little child with a new toy! It's going to be so much easier to identify my insects and wildflowers now. :0)
Great shot! I love his happy face spots :) I was intrigued about the question mark, so I looked it up -- it's actually on the underside of the wing, so that's why you can't see it in your photo!
Would love to see the question mark. Perhaps it's on the other side of the wings. Must have been having mating battles with all those tatters! Beautiful shot.
I'm surprised you didn't have the Field Guild for insects and spiders in North America already. Funny story about Question Mark. You photo does him justice. Very pretty.
Wonderful picture ! I have yet to see a butterfly up here. Can't wait. I was thinking of getting books too about bugs and birds so I know what I am taking pictures of. :)
@girlie It is on the other side. If you follow the link that @sdpace provided, it shows the question mark. I want to get a shot of it myself. Maybe I'll see one today. :0)
I've always thought about purchasing a field guide to help identify birds, flowers, insects, amphibians, reptiles & animal tracks but I just end up using the internet to find them.
@xlr8r I have been using the internet too, but I would get frustrated trying to find butterflies especially. The books I bought are really interesting and I can find names much quicker! :0)
