Sometime early this morning, the chrysalis I posted on August 13 opened! I knew it was getting ready to open at 2 a.m. It had turned a beautiful dark color with orange spots showing through. I have pics of it, but the lighting in my house isn't very good. I'm going to make a collage with the pics later. :0)
It's a Variegated Fritillary. I plan on releasing it in the spot where I found the chrysalis. I guess it wasn't ready to fly when I took this pic. I was snapping quickly, because I was sure it would take off. :0)
Thank you so much for your views, comments, and faves!!! I've been really lucky this week to find some cool subjects. :0)
I have added aan open shot of the butterfly and a collage of the day to My Little World album.
@chard Thanks! No, I'm always up late. I fell asleep in the chair and woke up at 5. It came out sometime between 5 and 8. It was the first thing I saw this morning. :0)
oh, so rewarding for you to follow that chrysalis and get to shoot this! Was it in your yard? How were you up at 2 am and this is not taken at 2 am, is it? and, one last question! Was it in a net house or something? looks like it is outside, but you speak of releasing him. He is gorgeous and a fav! Thanks for posting!
This is the chrysalis I found last week in the field. I've kept it in a butterfly habitat. I missed it's grand opening, but I took the chrysalis out at 2 this morning to take pics. I'll post those later. I took the new butterfly outside to take this pic this morning. It didn't fly away, so I put it back in the habitat. I released it outside where I found it.. I have a pic with it on my finger. :0)
Wonderful capture Carolyn - the wings still look a bit damp don't they. I guess it will fly when it's ready, but for now - great that it sat still enough for you to capture this moment.
Amazing moment.
