I found this bird nest on the ground yesterday. It's about six inches long and woven with natural and man-made materials. Some of the materials include blue yarn, fishing line, green plastic, white plastic, human hair, horse hair(I think), cotton fibers, pink fibers, sticks and leaves.
I've never seen anything like it. I would love to see how the birds do the intricate work. I would also like to know what birds built this beauty. I looked online and the closest I saw was an Oriole. I've posted a pic on my favorite wildlife site, but I haven't gotten an answer yet.
Lovely shot - I would be interested in hearing what bird made it. We used to spend hours watching the weavers and bishops building their reed nests. Amazing stuff.
@webfoot Thank you, Paul. The background is a basket. I couldn't figure out how to shoot it. I tried taking it outside and hanging it on a bush. It just didn't show up. I had used the basket to carry it safely and got the idea to shoot it in the basket. You may see the basket background for more pics. :0)
Isn't it amazing the work they can do...I think you are probably correct in thinking it an Oriole...that's what came to mind when you described it. Wonderful capture.
So intricate. They really are quite amazing structures. Just imagine constructing something similar with only using your mouth to place twigs, it gives an idea of the work involved.
What an amazing creation.
I would love to be able to actually watch a nest being built. It must be such hard work. So sad that the bird put in all that effort and it was blown to the ground. :-(
